Child abuse and neglect can take many forms — physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect. Knowing the warning signs can help you protect a child who may not be able to speak up for themselves.
You do not need to be certain that abuse is occurring to make a report. If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and make the call.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Unexplained injuries, bruises, or burns
- Sudden changes in behavior or school performance
- Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities
- Fear of going home or being around certain adults
- Lack of adequate food, clothing, or hygiene
- Reports of being hurt by a parent or caregiver
- Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior for age
- Frequent absences from school without explanation
